MICHAEL
MOEBIUS
Michael Moebius (perhaps better known as the ‘Bubblegum artist’) is a contemporary German painter known for his illustrative portraits of celebrities blowing up a pieces of bubblegum. Michael Moebius was born in 1968 when Germany was still divided in two by the Berlin Wall.
Moebius became aware of cultural differences between his home and the rest of the world, and this incongruity plays a significant role in his art today. The more he was pushed to conform to communist ideals, the more he became enamoured with western popular culture, and the more he was driven to create. Mobius’ unique work is making waves in the contemporary art investment scene. His works constantly grace international magazine covers and has twice been featured on the world’s ultimate luxury magazine, The Robb Report -a huge achievement for any artist.
His profile continues to rise, too, thanks to Moebius gaining traction and attention from some of the planet’s most recognisable celebrities. Mel Gibson and Paris Hilton are fans of him, as is KISS frontman Gene Simmons, Hugh Hefner, Rihanna and David Guetta. Michael Moebius’ real talent lies in turning pop-art and popular culture on its head with striking, almost innocent symbolism. Most famously, he gives a new dimension to popular cultural icons.
