PLUNKERT

American artist and designer David Plunkert’s public works include multiple murals commissioned by Park MGM in 2018 as part of a 6 million dollar renovation of Bavette’s Steakhouse in Las Vegas, Nevada, and two large acrylic murals commissioned in 2016 are on display at Smith & Wollensky in London. In addition, his paintings and three-dimensional works have been commissioned by private collectors and have been exhibited in galleries across the USA.

Plunkert has produced assorted visual works such as posters, covers, installations and videos for clients that include: Adidas, Adobe, The Baltimore Museum of Art, The Criterion Collection, Gatorade, Johns Hopkins University, The Maryland institute College of Art, Motorola, MTV Networks, Nike, Patton Oswalt, Penguin Random House, Steppenwolf Theatre, Sony, They Might Be Giants, Yo-Yo Ma, and the United States Postal Service.

Plunkert’s illustrations have appeared on the covers of Barron’s, Businessweek, How, Foreign Affairs, The Los Angeles Times Book Review, The New York Times Book Review, and The Wall Street Journal among others. His August 28th, 2017 cover of The New Yorker titled “Blowhard” received national media coverage, and was named “Magazine Cover of the Year” by the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) in 2018. He has illustrated the ongoing feature Way Passed Future for Wired Japan since 2016.

He has written and illustrated three issues of the comic anthology Heroical and illustrated hardbound editions of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein as well as Edgar Allan Poe: Stories and Poems, both published by Rockport. In 2021 his theatre posters were collected in the book Happy, Sad, Ugly, Pretty: Baltimore Theatre Posters 2003-2020.

He has won numerous national illustration and design awards from Communication Arts, Graphis, Print, The New York Type Director’s Club, and The Society of Publication Design. His work has been included in the juried show American Illustration almost every year since 1993. He has been awarded multiple silver and gold medals from the Society of Illustrators in New York. In 2013 he was inducted into the Alliance Graphique Internationale.

His posters are in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress, The Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum, The University of California Design Museum, Poster House NY, and The Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg, and have also been privately collected. In 2009 his poster for The Dungeon Masters was awarded “Best Poster” at the South by Southwest Festival. His posters were included in the biennial poster exhibition, Masters of the USA held in Bolivia in 2020.
